Last Friday, I hosted a room on ClubHouse discussing about how to gracefully switch your jobs from tech giants to somewhere else. During the discussion, we have multiple speakers previously working at Google, Amazon, Facebook and other tech giants in China. The discussion went on for two hours and there were (up to) 150+ people in the room.

Here is a summary of what I heard and hope this could be useful to those who were not in the room.

  1. Keep good connections with your circles. You will find it much easier to get a good opportunity when people in your circles help you with it. Keep in touch with your proactive peers, present your work to your leaders and make yourself more visible in the environment.
  2. Enforce expertise all the time. When job-hopping, the accumulated working experiences are of vital importance to your next job. The value you could bring to a company is the scarcity of your capabilities and how irreplaceable you are to the team.
  3. Measure risks and clarify goals beforehand. Be responsible and considerate when taking actions. Set a clear mind of pros and cons when comparing your current job and your potential choices. Try to see your path from a holistic view and the more you take into account, the goal is more clear to you.
  4. Mind the gaps and manage them. Sometimes people change ladders and have a hard time filling up the gaps of skillset between the new job and the previous one. Look at your skills and try to identify which are transferrable and which are not. Manage the gaps by utilizing these transferrable skills that smoothes the transition and cultivate new skills simultaneously.
  5. Job-hopping is an action, not a medicine. The last piece of advice is that if you change your job to evade the difficulty you encounter, you will probably find the difficulty is everywhere. Evasion only procrastinates and worsens problems. You need to figure out what the problems are and confront and address them.

We also touched the base of quitting tech giants to do startups (which is also one kind of job-hopping?) which would be a good topic for our next discussion.
